Making time for staff to be trained in a classroom experience with one another so that we can use real past experiences with patients as role playing scenerios. Reinforce concepts after training and encourage one another when with patients in distress to use the skills learned and not revert back to old behavior as a response.

Yes, the situations, concepts and understanding of precipating factors, rationaly detachment and integrated response help staff to understand the why as well as the what. That framework and underpinning of the course content are a great springboard to the actual responses and actions to take in crisis.

Yes, we do recommend CPI. We see it as a program that focuses on preventing crisis but, if needed we have the tools to physically get in control of risk behaviors that our clients sometimes present.

We train 100% of our staff for verbal intervention and holding skills as we are a small, critical access facility and often need to work as a team to provide safety in a crisis situation.

Yes. It is a well thought-through program that offers lots of resources. When people become more confident with this training it will be even more helpful. Staff are unsure and nervous about it now but with more practice, more confident I believe all staff will feel safer at work.

Required for employees in high patient traffic areas, patient care areas (such as units, med-surg., psych), security, companions. Regularly offers classes, at least twice monthly, as well as renewal classes.

We train all of our new staff in NCI with APS. We also trained all of our current staff in it as well. Every department also gets a booster every month to keep the information fresh in their minds. The staff also fill out the debrief reports after every safety hold that they have to do.

I would absolutely recommend it to any organization that encounters people in crisis. Even if they just do the verbal certification, it would be very beneficial for their staff.

Crisis Prevention Institute is being rolled out to 100% of the hospital staff including patient registration and Food Services. I have noticed a overall improvement with EVERYONE being trained. The program works much better when the training is offered to the entire team.

For years we have only been training the ED staff, I would recommend training your entire team. It has been much more a culture of our operations now everyone is on the same page.

We currently train all our frontline inpatient staff Verbal Deescalation. Our emergency department, behavioral health units and security staff receive Nonviolent crisis intervention and we plan on release Safety First to everyone else in the organization with little to no patient contact.

Absolutely! I think this training is phenomenal for staff, especially those that have little to no prior experience. It allows people to broaden their understanding of the individuals we work with and the different challenges they may face, while providing the foundation for how to help those individuals work through those moments, while validating them.

Very comprehensive and complete. I really love the example of the ice berg and what is known vs. the unknown. The verbal de -escalation techniques are spot on. I wish there was a way of putting in more about staff fear and anxiety. The first edition certainly went into more detail about fear and anxiety.
