We train school based teams but wish we could provide the de-escalation/ trauma informed approach to ALL educators within the system (not just teachers) BUT due to staff shortages, we could barely have our school-based teams trained as it was hard to have release time for a handful of staff.
Yes. The training has evolved to ensure there is a trauma-informed lens to the work/practice but that component needs to move forward and bring in elements of the impact of systemic racism as well as have to train on engaging in difficult conversations as sometimes behaviours develop because grown adults don’t seem to know how to be brave or honest in their work.

Our staff currently only have a small team of individuals trained to intervene and de-escalate to minimize disruption for others.
Absolutely, the skills staff gain from CPI can are above and beyond other behavior programs. They are simple, clear, and to the point. Anytime I have ever had trainer questions or concerns arise I receive immediate support, understanding, and clarification.

Our school district uses Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training to train every paraprofessional, security guard , and administrator in our district. Although it is not mandatory for teachers, there are many special education teachers as well as those in the general education that have chosen to be trained so they can de-escalate students and appropriately respond to a crisis.
I would highly recommend CPI to any educational or other facility! The training helps identify behaviors and provides a staff response for those behaviors. When a person is exhibiting risk behaviors, the training provides staff with options from least restrictive to most restrictive to provide for the care, welfare, safety, and security for ALL!

We have multiple trainers and conduct multiple trainings and follow-ups throughout the year. Staff that are trained include special education staff, administrators, support staff, Social Emotional Advocates (TOSA’s with a focus on social emotional learning), and some general education staff.
Yes, because it’s internationally renowned and vetted, and because the approach is effective both in the moment, via the debriefing, and in problem solving effective future approaches.

We primarily use the deescalation techniques using the integrated experience and verbal deescalation continuum as well as the decision Making Matrix. We rarely require physical intervention skills.
The CPI program integrates nicely with positive behavior interventions as well as social thinking strategies.

It gives our staff a better well-thought process of handling situations better. To fully be aware of the process of how students escalate and how to match with approaches.
Of course, this program has given us a good idea of how we are to move forward in a crisis situation.

The program has highly valuable curriculum for training staff in how to effectively work with students, parents, and other staff members that exhibit difficulty with mental health issues, disabilties, and/or have experienced trauma.

Since this is my first year as a CPI trainer, we worked on initial trainings with our administrative staff and refreshing staff that have already gone through the initial training. Our goal at our organization for the 2022-2023 year, is to help and support staff in deescalating behaviors within structured and unstructured settings. We feel it is beneficial for all staff to be trained and be able to deescalate a situation before someone goes into a crisis.
I would highly recommend CPI for other organizations that work with the public. It would help a lot for not only you when it comes to situations where a person is escalating but also for others to help in those situations too.
