At our small school we use the verbal more luckily at our site we have a smaller school and the kids are really good . So we haven’t had to use any physical techniques we can usually stop it at the verbal. But it is good to be trained in all areas in case we have to use it. I know at other school sites in our district they have more kids and have had to use more of there training. The one problem I see is our district only trains those in the special education where in the past past we trained all staff. I think this is good for everyone students, teachers , secretaries everyone that works with the kids and even the staff to learn how to handle every situation we come across even keeping our attitude in check. And to work together as a team.
Yes I would because I think it’s a great program

We conduct yearly trainings for current and new staff in the foundations course. We train additional staff based on roles using the autism program, and advanced physical skills. A great deal of the foundation of our mission, vision and school philosophy for our therapeutic school aligns closely with the CPI philosophies and way of thinking. We incorporate it as a state of mind and being not just a tool or resource for the extreme moments.

My district has had me trained so that I may rollout CPI in its entirety for all Special Education Teachers as well as ancillary supports (paraprofessionals, aides, phys. ed. teachers) in nonverbal deescalation and disengagement skills.
CPI, among so many other things, is a way to give teachers and education professionals the confidence that they can handle a crisis. Because of the shared experience, having this confidence can often prevent crisis from occurring because students and coworkers pick up on that renewed confidence. CPI is a culture-builder.

I have been a trainer since 2000 and will continue to be as long as I am able. I have been a trainer in a different prevention and intervention strategy but discontinued in favor of CPI.

St Tammany Parish Public School System currently requires all staff of Students with Exceptionalities to be trained annually. School administrators, counselors and MHPs are also included in this training as are Bus drivers/aides and specially appointed custodians, general education teachers, lunchroom staff, and select others.
I appreciate the verbal de-escalation training and understanding of trauma that students so readily face now days. The course is NOT solely meant to teach disengagements and restraints; most importantly, it is meant to teach the staff how to AVOID having to use the above mentioned skills!
