We were paying quite a lot for hosting our own Server instances of Jira, Confluence, & Cloud. We were behind on updates and costs and downtime for upgrades through our Atlassian host/consultant had become a large part of our budget for Jira. We also wanted to start using SSO with our existing G Suite org. We realized that we could migrate to Atlassian Cloud and not have any downtime or direct hourly costs around upgrades. We also coveted a couple of integrations that were only available for Cloud. Our cost analysis easily showed that we could spend less per year on Cloud than Server, as well as get more features/integrations and less downtime.
