Rev-Trac Case Study

Minerals and Metals Group Accelerates SAP Business Requested Change with Rev-Trac’s SAP DevOps orchestration

Introduction

This case study of Minerals and Metals Group is based on a September 2016 survey of Rev-Trac customers by TechValidate, a 3rd-party research service.

“The software and tools that come with Rev-Trac are fantastic for managing change across our SAP landscapes.”

Challenges

Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) is an Australian-Chinese global resources company employing more than 5,500 people with over $US 2 billion in revenue and over $US 14 billion in assets. MMG is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia and explores, develops, and mines base metal deposits around the world.

As part of its automation initiative, MMG decided to implement a release management strategy and needed a fool-proof process to manage significant upgrade projects. Running an extensive SAP IT infrastructure, they knew their existing manual non-automated SAP change control process was no longer going to help them meet business and industry growth demands.

Use Case

After evaluating SAP’s ChaRM functionality, Minerals and Metals Group selected Rev-Trac — an SAP DevOps platform — to implement a release management strategy, simplify the SAP change control process overall, and assist in managing future upgrades or other significant projects.

Planning is also underway to adopt Agile/DevOps principles for SAP change management, in which Rev-Trac will also play a key role.

Results

Following the selection process and the decision to implement Rev-Trac, the solution was productive within three months. Now several years on, the company has achieved its initial goals with remarkable results:

  • Manual effort has been reduced by more than 70%
  • Production stability (based on error reductions) has increased by over 70%
  • Has simplified the management of system change across SAP landscapes by over 70%
  • Eliminated over 70% of the manual retrofit effort

Before implementing Rev-Trac, between 7 and 10 potentially dangerous overtake and/or overwrite situations reached production each month. Fixing these errors could take almost two hours, which is a considerable loss in productivity before even accounting for the potential risk of downtime. Rev-Trac’s OOPS (Overtake and Overwrite Protection System) functionality eliminates this risk, returning lost productivity and increasing system confidence.

Additionally, the company has benefited from a significant increase (up to 69%) in the volumes of change managed by the team and a 70% reduction in time spent on audit tasks. Minerals and Metals Group continues fine-tuning their Agile Dev/Ops strategy using Rev-Trac’s workflow automation, superior conflict management, and extended locking functions.
