Like [competitor,] DPA gathers data from all parts of the server..IO,memory, SQL etc. The difference is DPA analyzes the data and makes recommendations. [Competitor] does not, therefore it still relies on the experience of the DBA to interpret the data and make a change. With [competitor] performance resolution would vary from DBA to DBA. DPA takes the experience and human element out of the question.

With SolarWinds DPA, I can now oversee the DBMS platforms I have little experience in and discern if a DBA has the experience to resolve a performance issue. It also has allowed us to end the ongoing debates between DBA and system engineering where the bottlenecks reside.

The biggest benefit of SolarWinds DPA has been expedient root cause analysis – the “grey” area becomes more clear and the blame game ends.
It is a very useful tool for DBAs and a must for System Administrators that support DBAs and/or are responsible for optimizing and maintaining the platform their SQL Servers run on.
Since it is SQL specific, the granularity of data stands out from general monitoring tools. We use Solarwinds SAM, NPM, NTA, etc. and this is just another example of how SW is broadening their portfolio with best of breed systems monitoring tools allowing our IT Operations staff to focus on other projects and tasks, rather than dump time into identifying buffer cache overflows, time wait handles, lock time-outs, etc. – performance monitoring can be very time consuming – fortunately, we have DPA (Confio Ignite).

SolarWinds DPA allows me to quickly identify queries that have been written poorly, have suddenly generated bad plans and are executing sub-optimally, or are heavy in nature. I can therefore focus on improving through TSQL improvement or index maintenance.

SolarWinds DPA’s focus on wait types is unique. The UI is clean, less cluttered and confusing than other tools I’ve evaluated. There is less of a footprint on the monitored servers.
