Google Cloud Case Study

Consumer services company in Italy changes cloud providers, migrates into Google Cloud to reduce costs while increasing agility, scalability

Introduction

This case study of a medium enterprise consumer services company is based on a September 2020 survey of Google Cloud customers by TechValidate, a 3rd-party research service. The profiled company asked to have their name blinded to protect their confidentiality.

Would you recommend Google Cloud?

“Who would not recommend the best to their friends?”

Challenges

This enterprise consumer services company was looking to make their board of directors and their developers happier with their IT landscape when they started to evaluate switching cloud providers. Ultimately, they were looking to meet a number of goals that their current cloud was missing, including:

  • Reduce cost
  • Improve agility, scalability, and security
  • Accelerate innovation

After doing their testing and research, they decided to migrate out of their current cloud and into Google Cloud for the following reasons:

  • Offers higher reliability SLAs
  • Makes it easier for us to scale up and down in real-time when needed
  • Provides a strong infrastructure for our compute, storage, security, and networking needs

Use Case

For their migration, they decided to migrate a number of types of applications, including:

  • Customer-facing web and mobile applications
  • Software creation / developer platforms and tools, dev/test infrastructure, sandboxes, etc.

To do their migration, this enterprise opted to do a rehost (aka, pure lift and shift) where they moved things as-is from their previous cloud to Google Cloud. They would make heavy use of Google Compute Engine and various Google Cloud storage and security solutions.

Results

Within just months of their migration to Google Cloud, they were yielding significant benefits and seeing a large improvement (of 50-99%) across all of the following key areas:

  • Reduced IT costs
  • Reduced IT maintenance labor
  • Reduced hardware procurement time
  • Reduced on-prem hardware costs
  • Accelerated IT / development cycles
  • Enhanced our overall security posture
  • Ability to focus on innovation (instead of management/maintenance)

Google Cloud Case Study

Insurance company doubles their focus on innovation by migrating to Google Cloud

Introduction

This case study of a medium enterprise insurance company is based on a September 2020 survey of Google Cloud customers by TechValidate, a 3rd-party research service. The profiled company asked to have their name blinded to protect their confidentiality.

“Google has worked hard to align their team with ours and this makes all the difference in which platform we want to use.”

Challenges

This enterprise insurance company was facing an upcoming hardware refresh when they started to evaluate a migration to the cloud. They decided to take this opportunity to downgrade their on-prem footprint while looking to improve agility and accelerate agility with a migration to the cloud.

After doing their testing and research, they said that they chose Google Cloud (over on-prem and/or other options) for the following reasons:

  • Makes it easier for us to scale up and down in real-time when needed
  • Provides a strong infrastructure for our compute, storage, security, and networking needs
  • Offers the tightest partnership, and is committed to understanding our technical goals and business objectives and helping us meet them
  • Will be able to help us innovate better and faster
  • Direct help with architecting our cloud foundation

Use Case

For their migration, they decided to migrate a number of types of applications, including:

  • Digital experience (e.g., CMS)
  • Software creation / developer platforms and tools, dev/test infrastructure, sandboxes, etc.
  • Reporting, analytics, IoT, and/or AI/ML

To do their migration, this enterprise opted to fully rewrite their existing applications, such that they took existing apps and rebuilt them from scratch in Google Cloud. To accomplish their goals, they would rely heavily on core Google Cloud solutions, including Google Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, in addition to multiple database, data warehouse, storage, and networking solutions in the Google Cloud portfolio.

Results

After their migration, they saw improvements within a matter of weeks for:

  • Reduced hardware procurement time (improved by 100% or more)
  • Accelerated IT / development cycles (improved by 100% or more)
  • Enhanced our overall security posture (improved by 1-49%)
  • Ability to focus on innovation instead of management and maintenance (improved by 100% or more)
  • Reduced IT maintenance labor (improved by 1-49%)
